A pellet grill combines the authentic flavour of wood smoke with electronically controlled temperature and very simple operation. In the United States, this style of BBQ cooking has been popular for many years, and one of the best-known brands in this category is Green Mountain Grills, or GMG.
But what exactly is Green Mountain Grills, how does a pellet grill work, and how is it different from a traditional charcoal or gas grill? In this article, we take a closer look at the history of GMG, how pellet grills work, the PRIME 2.0 generation, BBQ pellets, cooking possibilities and real-world user experiences.
Green Mountain Grills – from an idea to a BBQ brand
The Green Mountain Grills story began with a very simple idea – to build a better pellet grill.
GMG representative Jason Baker has explained in an interview about the company’s history that his father had been cooking on a pellet grill for years, and the family loved the flavour of the food. At the same time, he was constantly thinking about what could be improved in the grill they were using.
Experience in manufacturing and the import/export business helped turn these ideas into reality, and the first Green Mountain Grills prototype was created in 2007.
The manufacturer describes its beginnings in a similar way – they loved cooking with wood pellets, but the grill they were using did not fully meet their expectations, so they decided to create their own.
That idea grew into Green Mountain Grills.
Over the years, GMG became known for models such as Daniel Boone, Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett. In the latest generation, these have been succeeded by TREK, LEDGE and PEAK PRIME 2.0.
What is a pellet grill?
The simplest way to describe a pellet grill is as a combination of a grill, smoker and wood-fired outdoor oven.
Its fuel is food-grade wood pellets specifically designed for cooking.
The user fills the hopper with pellets, switches on the grill and selects the desired temperature. From there, the grill takes care of much of the work automatically.
How does it work?
The pellet feed mechanism, known as an auger, automatically transports pellets from the hopper to the firebox.
An electric igniter lights the pellets, while a fan supplies the air required for combustion and helps circulate heat and smoke throughout the cooking chamber.
A temperature sensor monitors the temperature inside the grill, while the electronic controller regulates pellet delivery and the combustion process.
A heat shield helps distribute heat more evenly throughout the cooking chamber.
The result is very simple:
Set the temperature → the grill automatically maintains the fire → you can focus on the food.
Why have pellet grills become so popular?
The main advantage is the ability to combine authentic wood-smoke flavour with automatic temperature control.
In traditional BBQ, maintaining a stable temperature is a skill in itself. If a brisket or pork shoulder needs to cook for 8–12 hours, the fire has to be managed throughout the entire process.
A pellet grill automates much of this work.
That is why this cooking style is often described by the phrase “set it and forget it” – select the temperature and let the grill do its job.
Real wood, not a gas flame
The heart of a pellet grill is not the electronics. It is wood.
Burning quality BBQ pellets produces smoke that gives food its characteristic BBQ aroma and flavour.
This is especially noticeable during long low & slow cooks at lower temperatures.
A pellet grill is particularly well suited for:
- brisket;
- beef;
- pork ribs;
- pulled pork;
- chicken;
- fish;
- burgers;
- sausages;
- vegetables;
- long smoking sessions;
- pizza with a suitable pizza oven attachment;
- and many other BBQ dishes.
For this reason, a pellet grill should not be thought of simply as a smoker.
Green Mountain Grills PRIME 2.0
The current Green Mountain Grills generation is PRIME 2.0.
In the PRIME 2.0 series, the manufacturer uses a 12V Direct Power system designed to provide stable temperature control and consistent wood-pellet combustion.
The PRIME 2.0 family consists of three main models:
TREK PRIME 2.0
The most compact GMG model. It is suitable for home patios, travelling, camping and anyone who wants the capabilities of a full pellet grill in a smaller package.
LEDGE PRIME 2.0
The mid-sized model and a very versatile choice for families. It offers a larger cooking area while remaining a practical size for everyday use.
PEAK PRIME 2.0
The largest PRIME 2.0 model, designed for larger quantities of food, entertaining guests and more serious BBQ cooking.
Wi-Fi control and temperature management
One of the major advantages of a pellet grill is the ability to monitor the cooking process much more conveniently than with a traditional grill.
GMG models can be controlled through an app, allowing you to monitor temperatures and manage the cooking process from your phone.
This is particularly useful when preparing brisket, pulled pork or another dish that spends many hours on the grill.
You do not need to stay next to the grill throughout the entire cook.
SideBURN – what about steak?
Pellet grills are excellent at maintaining temperature and cooking low & slow, but traditionally, extremely high-temperature steak searing has not been their greatest strength.
The GMG PRIME 2.0 system expands these capabilities with SideBURN – a high-temperature side burner.
This makes it possible to use the popular reverse sear method:
- slowly cook the meat on the pellet grill until it reaches the desired internal temperature;
- finish it quickly at very high heat on the SideBURN;
- achieve an evenly cooked interior with a deeply seared exterior crust.

RACKT – more possibilities from one grill
PRIME 2.0 models are also compatible with the modular RACKT system.
It allows you to change the internal configuration of the grill and use different additional racks, shelves and cooking components.
This is particularly useful when preparing larger quantities of ribs, meat, vegetables or several different foods at the same time.
GMG pizza oven
One of the most interesting Green Mountain Grills accessories is the dedicated Wood-Fired Pizza Oven.
It is not simply a pizza stone placed on the grill grate.
The pizza oven is installed inside the grill and uses heat directly from the firebox, allowing it to reach temperatures much better suited to baking pizza.
This means that the same GMG can spend one day slowly smoking a brisket for hours and another day operate as a pizza oven.

Green Mountain Grills BBQ pellets
Green Mountain Grills also offers its own hardwood BBQ pellets specifically intended for cooking.
According to the manufacturer, they are made from 100% kiln-dried wood shavings, with the pellets held together by lignin naturally present in the wood.
The manufacturer states that no artificial binding agents are used in the pellets.
Quality BBQ pellets are an important part of pellet grilling because both the combustion process and the smoke flavour are influenced by the type and quality of wood being used.
Different wood blends – different flavours
GMG offers several pellet blends with different flavour and smoke profiles.
For example, lighter fruitwood blends pair particularly well with chicken, pork and fish, while stronger wood profiles work well with beef and long BBQ smoking sessions.
It is important to use food-grade BBQ pellets specifically intended for cooking. Heating pellets should never be used in a pellet grill.

What do Green Mountain Grills owners say?
There is a wide range of GMG owner experiences online, and it is important to distinguish the latest PRIME 2.0 models from previous-generation grills that may already be many years old.
Independent BBQ reviewers have rated GMG models positively, highlighting features such as Wi-Fi functionality, versatility and overall cooking performance.
Owner discussions also include many people who have used Green Mountain Grills for five, seven or even more years.
Users frequently highlight the ease of pellet-grill cooking, the ability to maintain stable temperatures for long periods and the resulting BBQ flavour.
Are all reviews positive?
No.
Critical reviews can also be found online, particularly for older Daniel Boone and Jim Bowie models.
Some users have reported Wi-Fi connectivity issues, temperature fluctuations and the need to replace igniters or other components.
At the same time, several of these users have spoken positively about GMG customer support and the availability of replacement parts.
For this reason, when reading older reviews online, it is important to consider which generation and production year of grill is actually being discussed.
Who is a pellet grill for?
A pellet grill is particularly suitable for someone who wants authentic wood-fired BBQ flavour without spending the entire day managing a fire.
It allows you to experiment with traditional BBQ, smoking, meat, fish, vegetables, pizza and many other recipes.
The biggest advantage of a pellet grill is not only automation.
One of its most important benefits is the ability to achieve repeatable results. Once you find the temperature, cooking time and internal meat temperature that work for you, it becomes much easier to reproduce the same result next time.
Does a pellet grill completely replace a charcoal grill?
Not necessarily.
If traditional charcoal cooking and extremely intense direct-heat searing are the most important things to you, a classic charcoal grill remains an excellent tool.
The strengths of a pellet grill lie elsewhere – convenience, precise temperature control, long cooking sessions and authentic wood-smoke flavour.
That is why many BBQ enthusiasts use pellet grills alongside other cooking methods rather than treating them as mutually exclusive alternatives.
Why Green Mountain Grills?
Green Mountain Grills is not a pellet-grill brand that appeared yesterday.
Its roots go back to a time when the pellet-grill category was far less widespread than it is today.
Since its first prototype in 2007, GMG has developed into the modern PRIME 2.0 generation with electronic temperature control, Wi-Fi functionality, a 12V system, RACKT, SideBURN and pizza-oven capabilities.
Yet the basic idea remains very simple:
real wood + smoke flavour + controlled temperature + simple operation.
